HP COSMOS (2017)

A laser projection device that fosters collaboration all on one platform. The goal is to reduce clutter and distractions in a brainstorming session or collaborative meeting.

A sponsored studio by HP and ArtCenter to brainstorm and develop the future of computing. Cosmos was a fourteen week team project done in collaboration with Yozei Wu, Lynn Lei, and Asli Akdemir. Our primary focus was to connect digital interfaces with physical products into a seamless and intuitive experience. My role was leading the UX and product development side of this project.

Collaboration Gets Messy

Working together is key to creating successful projects. However, this process can get disorganized with loose papers and computer screens to access documents across multiple digital platforms.

Into the Cosmos

Cosmos is a portable projection device that gives creatives the platform to create and collaborate seamlessly. It eliminates screens and turns surfaces interactive for creatives to ideate, store, and access information all in one place.

The Hub: Starting Up

Cosmos turns on and rises with a tap of the touch sensor located on top. The hub's increased height gives it a better projection angle. Tap again to turn it off, protecting the projection unit.

Components

Airflow vents appear when activated. A fan draws in air from the bottom to top to cool down CPU units.

Laser Projection

Cosmos works with a circular projection around the hub. The laser projects a linear projection which rotates around the hub to generate a 360 degree projection with a 3ft maximum radius.

The rotational projection mitigates distortion from utilizing wide angle lenses.

Communication

3 infrared sensors on the hub communicate with each pen to track its location and actions. The tip of the pen is a translucent rollerball that sends infrared signals back to the hub.

The Pen: Quick Accessibility

By placing analogue adjustment inputs directly on the user's pen, users are able to adjust common settings quicker than through the digital interface.

Brush stroke + color settings are the default.
